For example fishing would be considered a broad theme but fly-fishing is a narrower niche. It can be narrowed down much further of course, fly-fishing in Alaska for example. A true entrepreneur will be able to spot a niche and exploit it.

She sees this as a challenge or a game – and an opportunity to continue building on the foundation she has constructed. To capitalize on these two avenues to business growth, Merry Jane must make the most of her limited time by creating low-maintenance, low-risk marketing strategies. Why Merry Jane should network: Because Merry Jane business owners report having myriad responsibilities in addition to running their businesses – whether they stay home with their children, have a full-time job in addition to their company, or take care of aging parents – they often don’t have much time to spend on marketing. Like Merry Jane, Accidental Jane enjoys her time freedom. In her work, she strives to find ways to structure her business so she can do more of what she enjoys, and less of what she doesn’t. Also, she strives to find ways to work with people with whom she enjoys working. Accidental Jane has the expectation that her business is an ideal way to gain greater control over the critical aspects of her working life. Doing work she enjoys, for customers she cares about, delights her because she takes tremendous pride in a job well done and enormously values her relationships. One crucial element of Accidental Jane’s definition of success: “enough, but not too much, work.” For Accidental Jane, then, networking provides opportunities for creating referral partnerships that help her maintain her treasured balance.

Why Accidental Jane should network: Accidental Jane must build strong working relationships with other professionals so she can provide her customers with exceptional service without sacrificing the time freedom she holds so dear. For example, if a customer asks a graphic designer Accidental Jane for a huge design project that also includes copywriting services, Accidental Jane could refer the copywriting services to a professional with whom she has networked, saving herself the time but still providing her customer with great writing services. The customer is likely to return to Accidental Jane when future projects arise, and the copywriter is likely to refer design customers to Accidental Jane.

How Accidental Jane should network: Because Accidental Jane is often reluctant to hire employees (because she enjoys her freedom), she must become adept at partnering with other solo-preneurs to bring a broader range of services to her customers. Her desire to build trusting relationships, and to help others succeed, drives the formation of such networks. This can become a point of pride and a unique positioning for her business as she sells it as a customer advantage.

Networking is a crucial component of business strength and growth for any business owner; the best course of networking action depends on a business owner’s unique needs, characteristics and constraints.

Immediately Meet with Lenders – Before you formally submit your business plan and financials make a point to meet with your chosen lenders and begin to develop a relationship or at least a line of communication.  Part of the reason you will get approved for a loan is because the bank likes the type of person you are, they want to see what type of personality you have and how passionate and ambitious you are about your new venture.
At First, Act Ignorant – When you first speak with the bank, act a little ignorant about the process in general.  This will allow the lender to provide information for you and give you insights as to what that particular bank looks for in a business plan.  They may divulge information that you might not have been introduced to had you acted like a know-it-all.  ”Acting” is not the same a “being” ignorant; know as much as you can before you meet with the loan officer.
Determine What is Important to the Lender – This tip kind of coincides with #2.  Each bank is different; they each look for a different set of criteria when analyzing a business plan.  For some, collateral is a prerequisite.  Others may consider the loan with no collateral if the positive cash flow can be reached in a short period of time.  Also, find out how the bank feels about your industry.  Have they approved loans for similar businesses in the past?  Do these process SBA loans?  Use this knowledge to alter you business plan.
Keep Your Financials Short & Sweet – Don’t overwhelm the lender with super detailed statements too soon.  In the beginning the bank simply wants to see the basics.  What are your costs, sales, expenses, and net profit each month and at what point does the business reach consistent profits?  They don’t need to know exactly how much you intend to spend on inventory or marketing materials at the first meeting.  However, be prepared to provide these details immediately upon request.
Have a Prototype – If your business is product based, prepare a prototype to show to the bank.  This gives them a more realistic idea of what you are selling.  It also shows that you care enough about your project to put in the time, effort, and money to create a trial product.
Network – Determine who has worked with the lender in the past.  See if this person or company doesn’t mind you “name-dropping” or better yet, making an introduction on your behalf.
Work with the SBA – The Small Business Administration can be very helpful in formulating your business plan and securing funding.  However, be aware, some banks don’t particularly like issuing SBA backed loans due to the added paperwork involved.

She may be a classic overachiever, taking on volunteer opportunities as well, because she’s eager to make an impact on the world and she often struggles to say no. Because she wants to say yes to so many people, she may even be in denial about how many hours she actually works during the course of a week. As a result, she may be running herself ragged and feeling guilty about neglecting herself and others who are important to her.

Go Jane Go business owners often find delegating difficult because they worry that no one else will live up to their own high standards. Therefore, they must hire helpers who are detail-oriented and who strive for perfection like she does, and who will find creative ways to encourage Go Jane Go to delegate to him or her. Also, Go Jane Go values her relationships with customers so much that she sometimes goes above and beyond what is reasonable, stretching her personal and business resources. Although working with a team may provide excellent benefits and results, an entrepreneur may not be ready for the costs and challenges of managing a team right away. Hiring an assistant is a great starting point in creating a team, as it encourages a woman business owner to learn to delegate effectively and provides a future link between the business owner and a team.

Prospective entrepreneurs are always encouraged to think outside of the box when striving to commercialize their idea for a new business. The ability to see things differently and identify a niche for a product is so essential. Unfortunately, there is no book, course or advice that enables a person to perfect this skill. Some of us stumble into an opportunity. Others are introduced inadvertently to an idea in their line work or at home. Many other successful entrepreneurs do develop an ability to see things a bit more weirdly than the rest of us.

There are many historical examples of great people that achieved great things by thinking differently. Alexander the Great was such a success. Alexander was a warrior at 14, general at 18 and king of tiny Macedonia at 20. He conquered most of the known world before his death at the age of 32.

An example of his unusual thought process was his approach to solving the famous 4th century problem of the Gordian Knot. Outside the Temple of Zeus, at Gordus, stood an oxcart with an unusually complicated knot attached to the hitch. The world famous Gordian Knot was made of densely packed comer bark and there appeared to be no beginning or end to the confusing mass. Oracles of the day proclaimed that Zeus had promised that whoever could unravel the knot would rule the world.

Adventurers from all over the world ventured to Gordus to try solving the puzzle of the Gordian Knot. None ever succeeded. Alexander spent hours pondering the Gordian Knot. He realized that success in unraveling the knot would further trumpet his reputation as the world’s greatest warrior. Success would motivate his troops and sow fear in enemies.

Finally, after interminable study, Alexander stood. He reached for a great axe and with violent suddenness, swung mightily. Striking the immense knot dead center, it fell open like a pear. The gnarled bulk of the knot fell to the ground and the oxcart was freed for the first time in centuries.
Alexander saw a problem that had vexed men for centuries. He applied a creative, innovative, indeed the simplest approach to the task. The puzzle of the Gordian Knot did not come accompanied with a fixed set of rules that had to be followed in order to claim success. The puzzle of the Gordian Knot simply required the oxcart be freed of the massive tangle. Alexander understood that conventional approaches to the problem, followed for centuries by all others attempting to untie the knot, was not relevant or of any import.
