Question by chris j: Business Marketing Education and Knowledge for Entrepreneur, which is best: college or self-teach?
I want to be a serial entrepreneur, or aka create many products and sale them to other companies. More specifically a Marketing Product Design Production Company, yea a mouth full I know. But here’s the problem… I want to master the art and knowledge of Business Marketing, and I mean literally. I want to know every possible thing about business marketing. So much that I want to get a PhD in it. But here’s the problem, the time, energy, and money invested into getting this education, could I get this on my own by “self-teaching” as to reading materials, or doing things that were similar of the students would be doing in classes of their masters/phd programs for business marketing. I don’t need a masters/phd honestly, you know the piece of paper saying I have a masters/phd… but knowledge for me I want and need the knowledge in order to master this area, and as my company will be extremely focused in marketing, I could efficiently run my company to the maximum level I want and need it to. Could you help with any kind of advice? Any advice is appreciated!

I’m currently attending a junior college and am exploring career opportunities.

I want to study communications and major in advertising/marketing because I want to eventually become an entrepreneur. I got into a few different schools (Michigan State, Florida State, Drew, Boston University, and I got wait-listed at Wake Forest). I have ruled out MSU and FSU because they were really my EXTREME safety schools and I am confused about the other 3. Now on one hand, BU has a fantastic communications program and it is in Boston which not only gives me a lot of job opportunities but will be a lot of fun. Drew I liked as a safety, my dad and uncles went there and it was nice but i never fell in love with it. Now the big decision for me i think will be BU and Wake, assuming I get in. The problem with Wake is that it doesn’t specialize in communications and I am nervous I am going to be will all Fairfield county people all over again. However, it is significantly higher in the ratings that BU and prestige is EXTREMELY important to both my family and myself. HELP what do i do?
I signed up for BU already (meaning i put down the deposit money but that doesnt mean that i payed tuition and if i get into Wake i can still back out of BU) but I’m trying to figure out in the best case scenario: that I get into both schools (or rather Wake since I’m already accepted at BU) what to do then.

More specifically, is somebody with an MBA more likely to be successful, as an entrepreneur, in any given field than somebody with a degree geared for that same industry. For instance (and this is a hypothetical situation) if somebody graduated with an MBA, and wanted to create a company that dealt with renewable energy, would the knowledge obtained in business school give this person a “leg up” on somebody who has a degree in environmental science, but little formal education on business?
