Being in business. What does this mean? Are we not all dumb accident trade on the arrangement of large enterprise utopia? We are all in business just by the nature of who we are and where we live. No not just Americans but all of us. Even the Dani and the Yanamamo, these people “primitive” in the rainforest. Each of us trade, sells (for something), obtains, wants and consumes! We have made. We are all entrepreneurs cosmic. Thus qu’obtenons us to be businessmen? Souci, entertainment, power, laughter, greed, humility, silver, toys, sex, love, hemorrhoids, heart attacks, satisfaction, reinforcements, disappointment, I amplifying, bankruptcy, wealth, clothing, disdain, just about everything! And… which of the utmost importance just another typical day at the office (or store or trolley or itinerary or whatever). The amazing thing is that we have this tendency to take so incredibly serious. I was speaking, giving private lessons, and consultation with business people, including my own companies, now for almost thirty years and one of the most interesting things that I noted is that in extending tendency to want to be content. Of course this has nothing to do with business at all and everything to do with our domestic individuals, yet we filter through our business lives. Here I would like training people how to sell better, more efficiently, effectively introduce myself and so on but in all my meetings I find myself constantly remind everyone, including me, that this is a game indeed, is what this business is… a game – more succinctly a game in a movie. Like a chess match in a production by Fellini. Ah, madness and beauty of it all. This is a situation that we have invented to conduct ourselves in so many different realms of existence. Point: If you really commit to play the game, game to win. Along the way, take time to look beyond all this wildness. Understand the comedy in it, even the comedy of the tragedy. It is correct to laugh at it and your individual because I think it’s a condition. Geez, if I could not laugh I would have cried myself into extinction long ago. Think of all the things that this substance unworthy business took you through, to small things, a heavy substance, the change of life and silly situations. Sit back and watch it. Now do not get too hard on yourself. No wallow in regret and do not think you know any. Look at it in perspective. Hey, there are plenty of people who would give their left arm to be passed by the kind of substance you even losses. And play with it and enjoy it.

Social media has become a phenomenon beyond words. Hundreds of millions of people all over the world have joined the party. In a millisecond, millions of people can know everything about everything and everyone. You knew it couldn’t be long before business got involved. Small business, big business, your business. I’m 65-years-young. I’ve seen a lot of opportunities come and go. I have also seen the complete evolution of the computer, and the complete evolution of the Internet. But never have I seen, or could I have imagined, an opportunity so great as business social media. And the best part is, it’s just beginning. Now is your time to take full advantage of this low-cost (often no-cost), global, and local opportunity. When companies like Procter & Gamble, Dell, Apple, IBM, Microsoft, Zappos, and Amazon dive head first into the process, you can be certain there is plenty of opportunity and plenty of room for you to do the same. BUSINESS SOCIAL MEDIA REQUIRES AN INVESTMENT: Your time. You must be willing to allocate an hour a day to build your network. When you do, and do it right, the rewards will be beyond your ability to measure. You will reconnect with business associates and you’ll attract people and prospective customers to connect with you a thousand times faster and 10 thousand times better than making the 100-year-old cold call. Business social media is the new cold call. You’ll make sales, you’ll create loyal customers, and you will profit from your ability to …

Featured as a career and workforce expert in Essence Magazine (September 2008 and April 2009), as well as in Black Enterprise Magazine (March 2009), social entrepreneur, international business and leadership coach, and author, Dr. Anita Davis-DeFoe announced the launch of the Circle of 99 during the recent Barbados Manufacturing Expedition 2009 (BMEX). The Circle of 99 is a think tank for women and girls that focuses on their personal and leadership development, as well as provides entrepreneurial and career planning support.

For seasoned, emerging, and the would be entrepreneur, the Circle of 99 is a personal, business and leadership network for women around the globe. Sharing knowledge, career and life wisdom; hosting events, and mobilizing women worldwide, women and girls are being invited to step into the circle and then guide its growth into their communities. The intent is to create of Circle of 99 on every island, in the 50 states, Canada, and selected communities worldwide.

The benefits of joining the circle are numerous; women will share knowledge, resources and barter services; career and business development training and information will be provided online and during local seminars, Circle of 99 assembled life and career experts will share wisdom with women and girls in the circle so that they too can create and enjoy more fulfilling lives. Using inventive technology provided by sponsors CaribVoice Radio and 365 Web Radio, Dr. DeFoe will be afforded the capacity to link with all of the women in the circle at any given time.

A columnist with She Caribbean (St. Lucia), and the author of several books which include, A Woman’s Guide to Soulful Living: Seven Keys to Life and Work Success; Tropical Escapes, a novel; and the just released, Follow Her Lead: Leadership Lessons For Women As They Journey From the Backroom to the Boardroom, DeFoe works to inspire individuals and organizations to greatness. In her groundbreaking new book, Follow Her Lead: she has penned ten compelling leadership fables which unlike ever before ignite a lively discussion about the competencies and practices essential for today’s emerging and seasoned leaders, who just happen to be female.

A CARIBVOICE Radio host, dynamic motivational teacher and knowledge facilitator, Davis-DeFoe has blended years of pedagogical and practical experience to fashion this newest informational resource which teaches both women and girls the technical and humanistic competencies essential for leading and career development. Dr. DeFoe is a sought after keynote and conference speaker, trainer and workshop knowledge facilitator across the United States, the Caribbean and Africa. Weekly, her show can be heard on CaribVoiceRadio.org, Wednesdays from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time. The praise for this new book which was launched during the March 2009 Women’s Leadership Conference at St. Johns University in New York, at a book signing sponsored by Target, has been stellar.

Suggesting ten pathways to leadership greatness, the inspirational, development visionary shared, “I am excited about this book, as it provides women and young ladies an opportunity to explore the personal and technical competencies critical to becoming an impactful leader. Writing Follow Her Lead allowed me to mesh storytelling, imagination, management and leadership principles thus giving the reader an active learning experience, while reflecting on personal leadership strengths and opportunities for improvement. My aim is to elevate the understanding and practice of leadership among women so that we become more comfortable in acknowledging and unleashing the greatness within. Follow Her Lead is ideal for personal development, as well as for staff development sessions, leadership and organization development training circles, supplemental reading for college courses and management training programs, an insightful resource guide for women at all stages of their career journey.”

With a warm smile, when asked why she felt compelled to create the Circle of 99 movement, Davis-DeFoe commented, “This is an opportunity for women to harness the knowledge, skills and support that often goes untapped. Too often, women suffer in silence or feel uncomfortable reaching out to other women because sometimes we do not know how to, or feel threatened mentoring and coaching one another. The Circle of 99 represents an elevated mode of thinking, a chance for women to learn how to work in collaborative, cooperative partnership so that we all can truly manifest our destinies, experience personal joy and greater fulfillment. The number nine is of spiritual significance as it represents divine completeness, for no matter what you multiply the number by and then add its product, the sum is always nine…hence this circle can be a source of unity which serves to uplift the individual, the family and ultimately community.”

Dr. DeFoe was the keynote speaker at the June 6th book launch of Caymanian Catherine Tyson, who just released a delightful new book entitled, I Am Somebody’s Mama.

Each day I receive notice for another social media training workshop be it for LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter. Yesterday a potential customer (a.k.a. prospect) contacted me about if he should attend one being offered by a local social media expert and business coach. Believing in never knocking the competition, I suggested that many of these learning or training engagements be them a social media class or seminar or even a college course presume that you have an effective website. Further conversation with this potential caller revealed he was not happy with the lack of traffic to his website. And this my friends is the fatal marketing presumption.

Until this obstacle (an unfriendly website) is removed then learning more about social media will probably not secure the results you want. Within this marketing strategy, the ultimate goal is to drive traffic to your website. If your cyberspace storefront is not key word rich, easy to navigate, ladle with fresh content, you will have visitors who stay less than 10 seconds and how exactly does that increase sales?

Now efficient and effective for me is defined as doing things right and doing the right thing. With respective to a website, this translates into a quality, content and keyword rich that delivers high traffic and eventually more profit regardless if the business is engaged in selling services, products or a combination of both.

The majority (at least 50%) of small business owners including single office/home office entrepreneurs who have websites have invested hundreds if not thousands of dollars to create and maintain them. Yet, these hard working entrepreneurs are receiving little to no traffic and the situation is not improving.

Through free trending tools such as Alex.com and Compete.com, businesses can begin to rectify that situation by comparing websites within similar industries. For example, my own sales blog and the website for my business receive considerable more daily unique visitors than the majority of other business coaches, executive coaches and organizational consultants with whom I interact.

Now I am not a “tekkie” person. If fact I am technology challenged. However, during the last 5 years, I have invested thousands of hours to improve my website on my own time. This improvement can be traced directly back to my business action plan and how I dramatically revised both my marketing action plan and sales action plan over 5 years ago. In other words, I am not engaged in spraying and praying my activities with the hope that something will stick.

Five years ago I had one of those I could have had a V8 moments or what I call a Swedish FHEM (flat head experience moment). Being a single office/home office entrepreneur, I had neither the resources nor expertise in marketing. Sure I attended local business networking events, chamber luncheons and other opportunities to meet and greet. However, the results were not in proportion to the efforts being demonstrated. I realized there had to be a better way.

One of my mentors, Ray Overdorff, shared with me if I invested one hour per day in expanding my knowledge of marketing in one year I would become an expert or at least far more knowledgeable. He was on target. In the book, “Outliers”, the author Malcom Gladwell suggests it takes 10,000 hours to be truly successful.

For the last 5 years I have planned my marketing and worked my education based marketing plan by contributing to such sites as:

EvanCarmichael
EzineArticles
NBiz Magazine
Post Tribune of Northwest Indiana
Sales Bloggers
Sales Gravy
Top Sales Experts

I am reaping the rewards of my education based marketing efforts because my site is found and continues to attract new visitors each day.

So if you are considering taking any social media training make sure your website is operating at close as possible to full warp power. Then take that social media training to supercharge your marketing warp engines and then you will find all of your efforts truly helping you increase sales.

An Urgent Mission for Social Entrepreneurs

Social Entrepreneurs around the world represent a collective force and movement of extraordinary power and purpose! The Know Now Foundation’s global initiative offers social entrepreneurs a wonderful opportunity to affect very real change in a way that genuinely saves and enriches lives.

While we are all grateful to and humbled by the efforts of organizations and individuals who have committed billions of dollars along with untold amounts of time and energy in the search for a cure for breast cancer, until that cure is found, we MUST do all we can TODAY to save the thousands of lives needlessly being lost only because their cancers were not detected early enough.

For social entrepreneurs The Know Now Foundation initiative is the perfect vehicle for effecting immediate, global, and urgent change and a means of making a difference that will positively impact humankind for all generations to come.

As social entrepreneurs ourselves, we kindly invite you to explore the information and possibilties presented on this website and to discuss them with the KNF ambassador who introduced you to our mission. We are confident you will identify numerous ways in which you can make a life-saving difference for those precious people in your life, and for countless precious lives around the world!

A Personal Way to Give and Grow

Millions of people around the world are joyously discovering the gift of getting personally involved with their charities of choice. The emotional satisfaction of being directly involved with the beneficiaries of your kindness is a more personal experience than the traditional practice of “charity by check”. By connecting friends, family members, and others into a figurative circle of people who share a passion for a cause and a commitment to benefit that cause, a Kindness & Giving Circle is created. The charitable efforts and contributions of the circle’s members generate an ever-expanding ripple of kindness and contribution through a human pool of like minded hearts and minds, all working together to spread the word and make a difference for a cause they collectively value.

Starting Your Own Kindness & Giving Circle

Every Kindness & Giving Circle starts in the heart of a person moved by a cause and a desire to make a difference. The circle is expanded as that message of purpose and caring is lovingly shared from heart-to-heart, person-to-person. Starting, or joining, a Kindness & Giving Circle is as simple and profound as making a commitment to a cause and finding like-minded individuals who share a passion for the cause and a burning desire to expand the circle by sharing the message and mission with others. Like ripples in a pond, once initiated, the PIF process (“Pay it Forward” process) of one person gifting another who in kindness does the same, expands the circle and affects people and lives in all directions and from all walks of life.

The recent presidential election and congressional races were won as a result of our faltering economy. The $700 billion bailout, nor gimmicks and schemes could prevent the financial meltdown we’re currently experiencing in America.

With a new administration on the horizon, now is the perfect time to become a social entrepreneur. A social entrepreneur is a person that is passionate about strengthening their community by using their ideas, programs and projects to make a world of difference.

Why? The currrent administration refuses to allow any of the $700 billion bailout money to be used to prevent additional mortgage foreclosures, however our government continues to provide free grant money to nonprofit organizations.

Government agencies, state government and local government cannot solve all of the economic problems by themselves. Our government needs you and your nonprofit organization to solve problems such as affordable housing, at-risk youth workforce programs, senior assisted living facilities, daycare programs, and numerous other problems our country is faced with.

One of the primary problems that need to be solved is job creation. With the possibility of the Big 3 automakers filing bankruptcy, a lot of jobs hang in the balance leading up to the holiday season.

In order to position yourself to secure part of the $450 billion of free grant money, you need to establish your nonprofit organization. The requirements for accomplishing this is listed as follows:

1. Identify what your cause is, in other words what are you passionate about?

2. Obtain your employer tax identification number for your nonprofit.

3. Incorporate your organization, visit your Secretary of State for your specific state.

4. Obtain a DUNS (Dun & Bradstreet) number.

5. Formulate your board of directors, include bios for each member and limit family members on your board.

6. Meet with your board of directors to establish your bylaws (operating procedures).

7. File Form 1023, documentation assist you with obtaining tax exempt status fro the IRS..

8. Begin networking with local officials to sort out problems your nonprofit can solve.

9. Register in www.grants.gov and apply for grants for various agencies.

You must have a bank account established in order to deposit your grant money. Lease space to operate your nonprofit, purchase or request organizations donate office equipemtn, hire staff, and deliver services according to the criteria outlined in the request for proposal (RFP) for the agency requesting the services.

Last but certainly not least, ensure you meet and if possible exceed the outcomes per your response to the RFP. At the conclusion of the first year of funding, you must file Form 990 to address the use of funds to the IRS.

Make a difference in your community and now you know why, now is a perfect time to become a social entrepreneur.

From the definitions I’ve looked up, this term generally refers to a dynamic individual who introduces a large-scale idea to the world that will help transform society. But what of the leaders within small communities around the world, that think of small ideas, which changes the lives of their neighbors and makes their corner of the world better with negligible support from the outside. I’m trying to think of a catchy title for a proposal that is meant to empower such individuals in Cambodia.

Along with sustainability and green living, social entrepreneurship is quite a hot topic. One way people can recognize their own potential for social entrepreneurship is by reading and following the works of those who are at the forefront of the movement. Social entrepreneurship is a grassroots effort that has picked up steam with the help of blogs and bloggers all over the world. By using their resources – the Internet and various social media platforms – they’re spreading the word in a way that stays true to their convictions, and still getting the message across to millions. These leaders are smart, successful, and have a great deal of insight into the constantly changing world around them. In this week’s top five, we’re exploring some of the best blogs for budding social entrepreneurs. These blogs help inspire other entrepreneurs to make a difference

3. Social Entrepreneurship @ Change.org

Change.org covers topics from animal rights to human trafficking. Their section on social entrepreneurship focuses on non-profit efforts, and strives to create awareness of the issues facing the industry. The site states that “Perhaps … social entrepreneurs tend to desire not only to meet a specific social need, but change the way those needs are met, in general.” Staying true to their…

lots of people like me and tell me that I am extremely charismatic, but sometimes I am just awkward as hell and people say that they don’t want to hang out with me because they can’t relate to me and that I’m too much for them. I have gotten a lot better about the awkward thing, but sometimes I say things that are just weird. I actually think a lot before I speak, but I am extremely clueless most of the time. on top of this, I just can’t relate to people and have difficulty establishing mutual interest. most of the things that interests people like sports, gossip, and talking about the past are of no interest to me. I on the other hand am interested in stuff like human nature, fantasy, adventuresome activities, and business (I’m studying to become an entrepreneur). even the interests that we have in common (fashion, alcohol, girls, fighting) I can never get anyone to talk about one of those things for more than like 2 minutes. I just feel like most people are these primal creatures with instincts that I just don’t have and I’m a confused quasi intellectual dude. it’s not that I don’t like people, I’m generally funny, playful, and affectionate, but they seem so different from me and I can’t understand them most of the time.
anyway, does anyone know how I can become less weird and relate to people more so that I can form more lasting bonds with people?

Many will view the world of entrepreneurialism as a means of developing a business to supply the financial requirements of household needs. The prevailing dream of most aspiring entrepreneurs is to work for themselves without the need to answer to a boss.

There is, however, a culture of entrepreneurs who not only seek to become self-sufficient in the business ventures, but they also seek to be agents of societal change.

The Schwab Foundation awards 30 international entrepreneurs with a Social Capitalist Award for not only succeeding in their profession, but also providing a sense of positive societal change.

The 2006 American Social Entrepreneur of the year winner was Kyle Zimmer and a company called First Book. This company has a desire to see low income children have every opportunity to read and own books of their own.

Statistics indicate…

61% of low-income families have no age-appropriate books in the home
80 percent of preschool and after-school programs that serve this group have no books at all for these children
There are 181,500 such programs in US cities with populations exceeding 50,000 alone
The children’s book market is a $27 billion industry with over 460 million books sold annually
In 2002, just 34.5 % of US households purchased at least one children’s book

The entrepreneurs at First Book have worked to provide new children’s books for less than $2.00 per copy to programs dealing with low-income children.

Because First Book is able to sell in mass quantities to grateful literacy programs they have a significant budget that allows them to provide books to severely disadvantaged children at no cost.

Reports indicate First Book has given away more than 43 million books since it’s inception in 1992.

First Book has shown it is possible to develop a business that allows you to do what you love and be paid to do so. They have also shown that they can take the passion of an entrepreneur and combine it with a desire to affect future generations in a positive way.

Finding the right business is discovering an underserved market and developing a solution to needs that haven’t been addressed elsewhere.

There are thousands of global social entrepreneurs who are giving back to their local, national and global communities.

In an era of governmental cutbacks and reduced budgets many of these social entrepreneurs are finding great satisfaction in contributing in a meaningful way to the things they are most interested in. The prospects are limitless and often provide a greater sense of satisfaction to those who include ‘others’ as part of their business plan.

Statistics indicate:

61% of low-income families have no age-appropriate books in the home.

80 percent of preschool and after-school programs that serve this group have no books at all for these children.

There are 181,500 such programs in US cities with populations exceeding 50,000 alone.

The children’s book market is a $27 billion industry with over 460 million books sold annually.

In 2002, just 34.5 % of US households purchased at least one children’s book.

I am considering my options on what major I should chose. I am currently about to enter a community college, aiming at getting my AA then transferring to a four year college, then graduate school.

During high school I privately studied philosophy, sociology, psychology, business entrepreneurship and economics. Overall my interest was analyzing the individual, society, and ultimately how they could better be joined. I always tried to stimulate my classes by encouraging them to give their input on various social issues and individual choices.

Currently, which obviously will probably change as I mature, I have no intention of holding a selected career for extended periods of time. I want to be a social entrepreneur at its very core, by impacting change through entrepreneurial methods. College is to enhance my skills and life as a whole, not for the benefit of some company or as security so I can work forty years before retiring. I want to have the flexibility to pursue my own interests, which may be with non-profits, NGOs, companies, etc.

I’m not as interested in race issues and poverty in America as many Sociology students seem to be. I do not want to have to take a majority of classes that don’t relate to what I want to do. I am more interested in globalization, economics of foreign countries (or local not sure yet), politics, etc. If anyone has read The Drifters by James A. Michener, the narrator (forgot the name) is exactly the type of thing I would love to do.

So I was thinking Sociology with a minor in Economics might be good, or vice verse. Although majoring in Economics in my opinion would get tedious very quickly. I love Philosophy but I do not see it as a wise career path so I will have to continue studying it on my own.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Also I realize that to get into a position where you actually make the slightest of difference takes time and dedication. I’m asking how I can get my foot into the door of social change. I just don’t want to chose a degree where ten years down the road I regret it because I found that I’m not really qualified to work with certain organizations, businesses etc.

Social responsibility is a concept that has been garnering an increasing amount of attention in the media. With only a limited amount of money available in the government sector and a tremendous need for assistance by so many legitimate groups desperate for funding, there is an inclination to place an expectation of assistance on outside sources.

A natural place to look for assistance is the business sector. Unfortunately many parts of the corporate world are very unwieldy when it comes to finding creative ways to assist communities. Often larger corporations don’t even have a local community in which to focus attention due to the sheer size of the company in question. Since the largest of corporations frequently lack that personal touch, there is a predisposition to move toward individuals who are successful and may be able to help on a more personal level.

Naturally, we look to the best, the most able, the most creative, and the most successful with an appeal of assistance. Who fits that description best? Successful Entrepreneurs. A successful entrepreneur has already creatively found a way to succeed where others have not, and it is natural to assume just such a person can find the ability to help.

Is it the entrepreneur’s role to help the community? Is it the social responsibility of the entrepreneur to “give back” to the community? This is a difficult question, but one that will need to be asked by every single entrepreneur. There is no perfect answer; however the most important role for the entrepreneur should always be to keep the business running smoothly and successfully.

By running a successful business, the entrepreneur will be helping the local community by keeping the local economy stimulated, ideally with local dollars and local jobs. However, stimulating the economy alone is not enough for most self aware and successful entrepreneurs. Most are entrepreneurs because they want to be their own cook when it comes to the food they eat, and that includes both the way they operate their business and the way they make a difference in the local community. It is that perspective that allows a successful entrepreneur to work within a philosophy that he or she believes in, and to put passion into the work that he or she does. For example, sometimes having success means walking away from high yield possibilities in order to keep one’s integrity intact, for the greater long term business good.

So yes, an entrepreneur has a social responsibility to give back to the community. The entrepreneur needs to first keep the local economy moving with a successfully running business. The entrepreneur should also practice sound business etiquette and bring a higher level of integrity to his or her business practices. This is a social responsibility that will benefit the fabric of the community in ways that can be more significant than the bottom line in a monetary sense. Beyond that, each and every entrepreneur should look inside of his or herself and ask if there is a higher sense of duty to do more. If the answer in their soul is “Yes,” then they have a responsibility to follow that calling and make an even greater impact!

Social entrepreneurs work with local groups motivate them to pursue, and develop good solutions for their local communities as well as globally.
• In innovative and effective community building:
Distinct from business entrepreneurs who seek value in the creation of new markets, social entrepreneurs aim for value in the form of transformational change that will benefit underprivileged group of people and eventually society at large.

Social entrepreneur identifies fundamental social and environmental problems in the ever-changing society. They guide society through these turbulent times, to help the society.

Coaching Social Entrepreneurs

What Exactly Is A Social Entrepreneur, Anyway?

The concept of “entrepreneurialism” was developed in French economics and has always been related to developing new markets and economic progress within a capitalistic framework. A successful entrepreneur of the traditional, capitalistic ilk refers to one who has the ability to take a business to the point at which it can sustain itself financially and operate with minimal supervision.

While the jury is still out with respect to what characteristics accurately define a social entrepreneur, scholarly definitions still on the table range from anyone who operates a non-profit social enterprise to individuals simultaneously pursuing financial and social return on investment in for-profit corporations (e.g. social sector businesses or multinationals with varying levels of financial commitment to social causes). Other institutional structures considered are affirmative businesses, community development banks and hybrid organizations mixing non-profit and for-profit elements in a myriad of ways.

However, those deeply involved in defining the term in such a way that speaks both to the current trends in social innovation, as well as to an “ideal” characterization of the social entrepreneur, tend to emphasize the concept is about more than “giving back” to the community. They state, rather, that the best definitions refer to an individual who pursues initiatives to meet human needs, and who does so with a pure entrepreneurial spirit; that is with radical innovation and a relentless drive to achieve a “new equilibrium” and sustainable success for the projects.

Some Examples

Perhaps the most widely known social entrepreneur and the man whose initiative spurred the quest for the term’s definition is Muhammad Yunus, who is known throughout the world as the “father of microcredit.” Yunus founded the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, making it possible for women who were unable to qualify for loans through the formal banking system or only by accepting exorbitant interest rates, to start their own businesses. By lending, from his own pocket, the now-famous sum of $27 to 42 women for capital costs, these individuals were able to stop begging in the streets, establish a tailoring business, pay back their loans and rise out of poverty.

Contemporary American social entrepreneurs include Steve Jobs and Wozniak of Apple Computers; Fred Smith of Federal Express; Pierre Omidyar and Jeff Skoll of eBay and John Wood, former Vice President at Microsoft, author of Leaving Microsoft to Change the World and founder of “Room to Read,” an initiative dedicated to literacy in the developing world. All of these individuals shattered the economic and functional limitations that held their industries back from radical change and created new approaches utilizing effective business models to make their projects sound and viable over the long-term.

Enter: The Coach

So, how might the coaching profession benefit social entrepreneurs? What might become possible for coaches and for the field of coaching as a whole as a result of coaching social entrepreneurs? And what might an ideal relationship between the two look like?

Generally speaking, once social entrepreneurs determine that they wish to live out the value of affecting positive social change, those who are working in the business world (many enter the field through other avenues), either restructure their companies or they leave their home companies to pursue these projects. Coaches who work with the corporate sector are in an ideal position to coach executives, senior managers and others who are longing to pursue large-scale social ventures, but require support to take the steps in this direction. Many coaches are already doing so.

In effect, you might already be coaching a social entrepreneur and not even know it. Becoming familiar with this emerging field can help both coach and client understand client goals within the most relevant framework, remain aware of available resources, dismantle limiting beliefs with greater speed and foster a certain comfort level with the notion of being an agent for radical, world-altering change. In turn, it can also allow the coaching relationship to remain highly relevant through the transition and beyond.

“Sound Familiar?”

10 Defining Characteristics of Social Entrepreneurs

According to J. Gregory Dees, Faculty Director of the Center fo rthe Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship at Duke University, there are a number of characteristics that define the social entrepreneurial model. The following 10 are central to his definition.

Social entrepreneurs:

1. are change agents

2. hold bold visions of qualitative change

3. address the causes of problems, rather than simply treating symptoms

4. seek to create systemic changes and sustainable improvements

5. adopt a mission based on their values and vision

6. entertain, recognize and relentlessly pursue new possibilities

7. are engaged in a continuous process of exploring, learning and improving

8. treat failure of a project as a learning experience, not a personal tragedy

9. act boldly despite perceived and real limitations

10. exhibit a heightened sense of accountability to those they’re serving

Fundamentally, then, social entrepreneurs are already very coach-like in their approach to pursuing their ideals. In both fields we see the desire for fearless change based in deep-seated values, the seizing of the widest possible range of possibility combined with a fundamental reverence for the human being and concern for the conditions in which human beings live.

A Marriage That Could Save the World?

Not only are the parallels between the characteristics of coaching and social entrepreneurship striking and their emergence on the world stage timely, the potential power that exists if the two fields were to merge and work together on a global scale is immense.

Might the timing and alignment be an invitation for the two to merge and work together more deliberately, within a new framework? From the coaching perspective, it is an opportunity to work with value-centered businesses toward more radical ends than ever and with individuals whose dreams have far-reaching impact. For coaches whose central values include addressing world needs or who harbor a longing to be part of large-scale transformation and change in the world, social entrepreneurship can be a niche-defining dream come true.

For the social entrepreneur, coaching provides the opportunity to move more forward swiftly, with more personal power, clarity and focus to affect positive change both in themselves and on the world stage. More than ever, these entrepreneurs need professionals who can challenge them to think outside even the biggest box and to support them in creating powerful social change, whether the desired result is hungry people fed, children clothed, the environment healed, advances in philanthropy, healthcare, film, or the emergence of new banking or political structures.

This relationship is also an opportunity for the coaching profession to become active in helping to create new paradigms for world change. And what if the relationship between the social entrepreneurial movement and the coaching movement could result in something even bigger – even more powerful? What if it is central to a shift in planetary consciousness? Not only could the reputation of coaching take a quantum leap as a result of this work, but these corporate clients who are fulfilling a mission greater than their own immediate needs would be met with a community prepared to walk alongside them.
